If you didn't apply and go through the interview process, then yes, it is random. So if you have Pre-Check as you say, no worries - you have it.
Some airlines also have the ability to randomly grant it so if you don't have a known traveller number you may be selected and some of your party may be selected and others not get it. If you applied and had it granted after your interview, you will always have it if you provide the known traveler number with your reservation. TSA Pre-check isn't a "selection" process or random. There are also sky caps some of the time - but have been at the airport and there was only curbside check in and no sky caps to be found. You reduce your walk with luggage but increase time in line. Sometimes, those lines are longer than the ones inside. I would take a quick peak inside the terminal before getting in the curbside line check in. It is very well marked if you look at the overhead signs. I point this out because with 3 kids in tow, you will want to make sure you are entering the security point closest to your gate. It is possible to enter any security point and get to all gates but it could involve extra walking. There will be signs indicating the wait times at the four different security points. Sky Harbor has one of the fastest and most efficiently run security check points I've used.
